Homemade Cold and Cough Remedies
- Honey and Ginger:
- One teaspoon of honey, mixed with the juice of some ginger, is a great way to soothe colds. However, honey should not be given to children under one year of age, for fear of causing botulism.
- Turmeric Milk:
For children above 1 year of age, you can mix a pinch of turmeric powder in their warm milk. It has been known to be an effective tool for easing cold and flu symptoms.
- Steam:
The most effective way to get rid of common cold for kids of all ages is using steam. All you need is a vaporizer filled with water, and run it through the night in your child’s room. For added comfort, you may add a few drops of eucalyptus oil to the water, or juice of half a lemon. Steam helps clear the nasal passage, and makes it easy for your child to breathe.
- Gargling:
Early morning gargles with warm salt water is an effective way of opening up the lungs and clearing the throat. Children above four years can be taught to gargle to ease their congestion.
